The problem, it turns out, lies not with the SmartMedia cards, but with the MacOS. Apparently one cannot delete photos without subtly corrupting the card's filesystem; all deletions must be performed in the camera rather than the computer. A friendly tech at Glazer's reformatted the cards for me, and all is once again well.

There's a peculiar SmartMedia issue where the cards sometimes go bad in a way that renders them unreadable and unformattable. The last of my camera's memory cards succumbed to this flaw today and I am no longer able to supply my web site with pictures. I'm hesitant to purchase new memory cards, as it appears likely that I will get only a couple of months' use out of them, but I am even more hesitant to replace the camera and card reader with a Compact Flash system. Until I decide what to do, there'll be no more pictures here.
