well. one year, nine months, and fourteen days later, it's done enough to call "final candidate". i am tired.

I hope I never have to write another Basic compiler again... though i'm sure it would take only half as long to repeat the job.

time for a little mini-vacation out to the olympic peninsula, to see a friend who has moved out there. i don't expect it will be a particularly relaxing sort of trip but at least it will get my mind off work for a day or two.

work work work work. work work work work work. work. work work. twelve to fourteen hours a day, six days a week. and sometimes a few hours on sundays too. how long has it been? weeks? months? i hardly remember anymore. it blurs together and i know christmas happened in there somewhere and once a long time ago i was still looking forward to the day we'd make everybody switch.... it's catching up to me: I am tired. I find myself unreasonably irritated by coworkers I really like. i think of suggesting: "hey, why don't we not add any new features for the next version?". and consider it seriously. all day, before realizing what kind of silly impossible that is.

but i'm catching up to it. we go final candidate tomorrow, or more realistically friday. code freeze on monday, or more realistically wednesday. we'll be selling product next week.

and then there's one more month of nonstop keyboarding to really finish it. we'll call that RB 5.1 and give it away free to anyone who buys the first release, as a sort of apology.

it's good, it really is. it's hard to see that through the flurry of bug reports that just won't stop coming, and it's easy to hear the beta testers gripe and moan about how much better the old code was, and to think that i've just spent the last two years inflicting a heap of misery on anyone silly enough to try using my software-baby. but the hardest part is already over. the inertia is overcome. i've pushed and sweated and schemed and brained my way through it and now that we're rolling it is going to be one awesome ride.

kenobi, meet houdini.
