I spent this afternoon paddling from the west side of Lake Union over to the east side of Lake Washington and back. It was 3 hours and 15 minutes of paddling, with a two minute break at the halfway point to eat a powerbar and drink some water. What a trip! My arms ache in a nice warm way. There are some good waves out on Lake Washington when the wind picks up. I love being out on the water - pulling the paddle in a steady but slightly irregular rhythm, cutting smoothly through calm water, diving and curving through the chop. I usually start out with a head full of thoughts and come back calm, submersed in the experience. I spend most of my time in "the world of thoughts and ideas" - it is sometimes a bit of a surprise to discover that I can function well in the material world also. I am stronger and have more endurance than I usually expect.
I would like to go kayak-camping around the San Juan Islands sometime - maybe this summer.

Brilliant essay on the popularity of multiplayer online roleplaying games. Smartest thing I've ever heard said about 'em - which isn't saying all that much, really, but this is one of those essays that made me think "wow, yeah, I had never thought about it that way before but that makes sense".
